The Infrared Sauna and Meditation Lounge at Saguaro Sanctuary

Infrared sauna with a glass front and rolled towels on the bench at Saguaro Sanctuary in Cave Creek, Arizona

On every group trip, someone eventually needs a break from the group. Maybe it's after a morning on the trail, a long afternoon of pickleball, or two days of nonstop conversation. At Saguaro Sanctuary, the meditation lounge is the room for that.

What's inside

The infrared sauna anchors one side of the room, a cabin lined in light wood behind a glass front, with rolled towels waiting on the bench. Across from it, floor cushions form a circle on a woven rug around a set of sound bowls. A lounge chair and a sculpted stone bench sit by a wide window that looks out onto saguaro and desert plants. Extra towels hang on the wall by the door, so nobody has to go looking for one.

How an infrared sauna feels different

A traditional sauna heats the air around you. An infrared sauna uses panels that warm your body more directly, so the air inside stays milder. Many people find that easier to sit in for longer, especially if they aren't regular sauna users.

A room for different paces

Groups rarely want to do the same thing at the same time. While some people are in the pool or on the court, others can take a session in the sauna, sit by the window with a book, or spend a few quiet minutes on the cushions. Because the room is separate from the main living spaces, it stays calm even when the rest of the house is busy.

A good way to end the day

Some groups turn it into an evening routine, taking turns in the sauna while dinner comes together at the outdoor kitchen, then heading out to the firepit. Drink plenty of water before and after a session. Anyone who is pregnant or has a health condition should check with their doctor before using a sauna.
